Freshman Year:
During freshman year, students will read a myriad of the great American classics, such as The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, and The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger. They will also be able to read a plethora of poetry written by poets such as Walt Whitman and Robert Hayden. Throughout the year, the students will acquire the ability to properly analyze these works of literature in a meaningful way, and recognize the similarities and differences throughout these books. Throughout the year, students will take many of their own written works and take them through the writing process, revising, editing and eventually producing a final product that illustrates the elevated standards of this school.

Sophomore Year
During sophomore year, the students will expand their expertise of literature to include British, African, Australian and Middle Eastern works. Students will read both classic and contemporary novels to broaden their knowledge and compare how far literature has come. Students will read books such as Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens and Persuasion, by Jane Austin. Students will also read contemporary novels such as The Kite Runner, and A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, and The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. Students will again write their own works, including essays, poems and even their own short stories. However, students will go further into the writing process than before, carefully editing and revising their work with the help of our competent staff in the English Department.
